Tips for Vegans during the Holidays

Updated: Dec 11, 2019

The holiday season is upon us! Thanksgiving and Christmas are filled with events, family and friends, decorations, and yes, FOOD.

As someone who is vegan or plant-based, I'm sure the holidays pose some difficult moments for you. Instead of having to deal with those times, we wanted to share some tips that will help make this holiday season the best yet! All it will take is a little bit of planning.

1. Bring a dish that you know you can eat

You know your diet better than anybody else. If you’re vegan or plant-based and are going to a Thanksgiving Dinner, it might be best to bring your own dish. It could be a main dish (Try the Tamale Pie from https://littlegreenforks.com/menu/#/menu). Or you could even do a side dish (Stuffed Pumpkin from https://littlegreenforks.com/menu/#/menu).

There are so many plant-based recipes online that would be perfect for Thanksgiving. Not only will you know you’re keeping on track with your lifestyle, but you will also be able to share your dish with others to help open their mind about plant-based food. You may also want to bring a dessert to share!

2. Talk with the host of the event ahead of time

Nowadays, people are a lot more accepting of the plant-based lifestyle. After being invited to a Thanksgiving dinner, contact the host of the event and tell them that you are plant-based. Most hosts would be understanding enough and might even add a dish just for you. You can encourage them by sending them a recipe, or even offering to go over a little earlier to help them prepare it. Doing this will ensure you get a dish that you can eat, and that others can also try a vegan dish and open their mind a bit more. That way, everyone wins.

3. Invite others to your place for dinner

Another great way to combat any difficult moments during the holiday, is to host your own Thanksgiving dinner. By doing this, you will be in charge of all the dishes and can prepare exactly what you want. It also encourages others to try vegan dishes and taste a new flavor they may have never had.

Hopefully these tips help this Thanksgiving! Comment below if you have any of your own!
