How to Deal with Chip Cravings

Updated: Jan 28, 2020

Our answer...Satisfy Them!

There are so many chips out there; and a lot of them, are probably pretty bad for you. You know the typical ones like Doritos, Fritos, Lays, Ruffles. They're filled with a lot of milks, cheeses, and oils usually. They may even be labeled as "Vegan", but they still aren't all that healthy for you.

"So then how do I satisfy these chip cravings!?" you may ask.

Well one way you can do it is to opt for a cracker instead of a chip. Crackers are similar in texture and typically serve the same purpose. There are a lot of cracker brands that don't use oil as one of their ingredients, which is a lot better for your overall health. If you're looking for a healthy and plant-based cracker brand to try, you can most likely find the following either online or in retail stores like Whole Foods.

1. Whole Foods Baked Woven Wheats (Highly recommended by NuSci): Available at Whole Foods; this cracker looks and tastes exactly like a Triscuit, but doesn't have the fat.

If you don't want to go out and buy crackers, and are craving chips instead, then take a chance and make your own homemade oil free baked chips! The best part of making things homemade, is that you know EXACTLY what ingredients you use and how much of each. With you in control of making the chips, you can avoid the use of oil, as well as the overuse of salt or any animal products at all. If you're more of a home cook and would like to try a no oil chip recipe, you should try one of the following:

If you do make some homemade tortilla chips, try pairing it with the Little Green Forks Tamale Pie! It's a great entrée to eat with your tortilla chips, and is going to give you the comfort food satisfaction, without the guilt.

If crackers are more your craving (it's okay to be a little different!), then you can try a homemade cracker recipe. There are so many out there that use various ingredients such as chickpeas. These are the ones we suggest below:

We really wanted to be able to share some oil-free chip brands with you, but unfortunately they are very difficult to find. There was one that was highly recommended by NuSci, however we recently discovered that they have discontinued them. The brand was LaReina and they were a no-oil corn chip with only whole grain corn meal and lime. We did a little more digging and did discover a secret gem! They are baked tostadas that do not use oil and they're called Charra's Baked Corn Tostadas. If you break them up, they're just like tortilla chips! These can also be found at most grocery stores.

If you know of any more brands that carry no oil chips or crackers, please share them with us in the comments! Sharing information is how we can continue to encourage this world to adopt a plant-based lifestyle. And also, with chips and crackers, they are not meant to be eaten every day but as an occasional snack to help overcome those cravings.
